Day 10: Auburn

Shade still finds himself surprised by how thinking about Solara inspires his mind with quiet, poetic words. He doesn't say them aloud, not because he’s embarrassed, but because he doesn’t have anyone he feels would want to hear them. Instead he jots them down - sometimes in the margins of his notes or scribbled onto post-its he tosses into the small pocket of his backpack.

He contemplates that maybe one day I'll let her see them. Maybe in a few years if she doesn't find someone better, maybe it would make a good present. Maybe, maybe, maybe. He doesn’t consider himself a master of gift giving, but he does try.

There is one image that eludes him - how her hair, already a beautiful red, matches the sunset. It struck him the first time they stood on the beach together, the sea salt in the Pacific wind biting at their faces after a long day of troubles. No matter how hard he tries to capture words to describe the sight, it always feels wrong, never perfect enough, never bright enough.

With Solara, properly enough, it is like trying to take a photograph of the sun.
